Created 1st Baronet Blackett of Newcastle in the County of Northumberland 12 Dec 1673, the fee being remitted "in consideration of his good services". Mayor of Newcastle 1666/67 and M.P. 1673-1680.
Member of merchant adventurers, Newcastle 1645, freeman 1646, common councilman 1648, member of Eastland Co. 1652, Hostmen's Co. 1652 (governor 1662-64 and 1677-79), Commander for Militia Mar 1660, Captain of Militia Apr 1660, Commissioner for Assessment, Newcastle 1660-61, and for Co. Durham & Northumberland 1667-1680, Sheriff of Newcastle Oct 1660-1661, Alderman 1661-1680, Mayor 1666-67, Deputy Lieutenant 1670-1680, Justice of the Peace, Northumberland 1673-1680, Commissioner for Carriage of Coals, Port of Newcastle 1679. Elected M.P. for Newcastle 1673, 1679 & 1679/80.
Founded a mercantile and industrial base, involving land, and coal and lead mining. He bought Newe House, Newcastle, which was sold a century later and renamed Anderson Place, and in 1676 bought Woodcroft from his 3rd cousin William Blackett. Will dated 9 Mar 1679/80. He was buried "according to the act", i.e. in woollen cloth. Claimed to be born in Hoppyland, but was born in Jarrow, according to a newspaper article.
