In partnership with Elizabeth Hays and Ralph Fenwick Blackett (his brother) as Thomas Hays and Co., chemical manufacturers. Partnership dissolved 1885 and continued by Elizabeth Hays and William Charlton Blackett. Co-founder of Blackett and Howden organ builders, who ceased trading in 1975. Embarked for Hong Kong 16 Jan 1917 and settled there. Rebuilt the organ in Hong Kong Cathedral. some time between 1917 and 1920/21. The original partnership of William Charlton Blackett and Charles William Horden was dissolved 31 Dec 1923 and carried on under the name of Blackett & Howden by Charles William Howden, Ralph Walton Blackett and William Moffatt. Installed the organ at Kowloon Union Church in 1931. Rebuilt the Cathedral organ again in 1937/38.
