Surveyor for New Zealand Government. In 1889 went to South America, working in engineering, railway construction and mining developments in the Argentine. Divisional Railway Engineer between Mombassa and Victoria Nyanza, East Africa 1895-1903, (where Mount Blackett, Rift Valley, Kenya is named after him). Then Divisional Surveyor for Central South African Railways. Letters of Administration (Limited) granted 20 Jun 1906 to Lewis Gardner Thomson solicitor, attorney of Oliver Hiram Ellis.
