Ropemaker (retired) in 1939. Teesdale Mercury, Barnard Castle 19 Oct 1887. "A band of young men acting as the Christy Minstrels gave an entertainment in the Morriss Memorial Schools, on the evening of the 7th of October. This is the second time the minstrels have performed at Startforth........The object of the entertainment was to raise funds for the Boldros Mission.... " Mr. J. Kavanagh's solo songs were: comic song: "I Say, Tommy"; comic song: "Caroline"; song: "Annie Dear"; comic song: "Rocking the Baby to Sleep"; comic song: "The Bald Headed Swell". "The singing and acting of Mr. J. Kavanagh was very good indeed, and he received several encores." Teesdale Mercury 9 Nov 1887 "The Barnard Castle Christy Minstrels gave their third entertainment, this season, on Saturday last, in the Miners' Hall, Butterknowle....Mr. Kavanagh's songs, "Rocking the Baby to Sleep" and "The Bald Headed Swell", brought down the house and were encored. The acting of Messrs. J. Kavanagh,....... was very good indeed and caused great merriment....... The entertainment was given in aid of the men who are on strike at the Woodland Colliery." Teesdale Mercury 14 Dec 1887 "On Saturday evening a grand entertainment was given in the School-room at Egglestone, by the Barnard Castle Christy Minstrels, on behalf of the brass bands funds....."a capital song, "Orange Blossoms" by Mr. J. Kavanagh............"Rocking the Baby to Sleep" and "The Bald Headed Swell" were two character songs exceedingly well performed by Mr. J. Kavanagh.......A series of the most amusing sketches and farces carried out by Messrs. Longworth, Kavanagh, and Smith, caused endless amusement........upon Mr. Kavanagh's being recalled, he rendered "Where's That Bob" in his own inimitable style. The singing of "God Save the Queen" brought a thoroughly enjoyable evening to a close." Teesdale Mercury 20& 27 Feb 1889 "HURY. Entertainment at the Navy Mission Room. On Friday evening the Barnard Castle Christy Minstrels gave an entertainment in the above room to a large audience.......special mention mus be made of Messrs. Wardle, Kavanagh (who kept the audience in roars of laughter)......." [Several more mentions of him.] Teesdale Mercury 5 Feb 1890 report of knife and fork supper at Barnard Castle Junior Liberal Club. 2 songs "Scheider, how you vas" & "Rocking the baby to sleep" sung by Mr. J. Kavanagh. Possibly the "Bro. Cavanagh", who "enlivened the proceedings with a song" at the Oddfellows annual supper and entertainment (Teesdale Mercury 14 Dec 1892). His father had played engagements for the Oddfellows in Belfast. Teesdale Mercury 18 Jan 1893 "Young Men's Entertainment at Barnard Castle. An entertainment given by the young men and friends of the Primitive Methodist Society, in friendly rivalry to a similar one provided by the young ladies, about a month ago, came off with splendid success on Friday night, in their school-room in Newgate..........songs were given by...Mr. J. Kavanagh......An amusing renering of two duetts by Messrs Kavanagh and R. W. Appleby created quite a storm of applause.....The merriment of the audience was perhaps at its height when the laughing chorus was given by Messrs Kavanagh, Wardle, White and Appleby, which concluded the programme." Teesdale Mercury 11 Apr 1894 "Startforth Cricket Club.....Mr. Kavanagh was elected vice-captain." [Several sporting references to him around this time and later.] Teesdale Mercury 20 May 1896 Startforth School annual entertainment - several songs by Mr. J. Kavanagh. Teesdale Mercury 13 Oct 1897 Langleydale National School concert: included songs by Mr. Kavanagh. Teesdale Mercury 11 Jan 1899 Cotherston Temperance Hall, New Year's entertainment by Cotherston and Barnard Castle friends - inc. songs by Mr. J. Kavanagh. Teesdale Mercury 3 Jul 1901 Barnard Castle Flying Club (pigeons) first and only bird race from Mansfield (105 miles). J. Kavanagh entered 2 birds. (Several more mentions around this time.) Teesdale Mercury 4 Nov 1903 Remember the Silvertop Institute Grand Evening Concert, Friday, November the 6th, 1903. Mr. Kavanagh, Barnard Castle amongst those who have promised their services. Teesdale Mercury 20 & 27 Apr 1904 "TO ASSIST A BLIND MAN [Mr. Charles Hodgson]. A GRAND EVENING CONCERT will be given in the Victoria Hall, Barnard Castle on Friday, April 29th, 1904 [Mr. J. Kavanagh amongst the vocalists.] Teesdale Mercury 29 Nov & 6 Dec 1905 Victoria Hall, Barnard Castle A Grand Evening Concert Monday, December 11th 1905 [includes Mr. J. Kavanagh (humorist).] He was (according to his niece, Julia Blackett) "a very good yodeller." Aged 74 at death. |
