Note
3rd. Baron. A Lt.-General in the British Army. Said to have also married Louisa in 1799 by a Scottish ceremony which was judged unlawful. Under Scottish Law, the later marriage legitimised children already born, and the Baronetcy passed to his eldest son. The Peerage title was in the Peerage of Ireland, however, and Ireland did not allow subsequent marriages to legitimise such children. The Peerage therefore passed to the eldest son born after the 2nd marriage, Godfrey, and Alexander William Robert took the surname of Bosville and remained in Yorkshire. In 1910, by a Declaration of the Court of Session, Alexander was judged the lawful heir, and his descendants reverted to the name Macdonald. On 11 Apr 1814 Sir Godfrey's name was changed to Bosville by Royal Licence.
Note
An earlier Scottish marriage ceremony in 1799 was judged to have been unlawful.
