Killed when aged 16, working as a "putter" (boys who pushed the coal wagons from the pitface to the main shaft). Killed "when bringing out the last tub of his shift, it got off the way and displaced some timber and a quantity of soft blue stone fell and suffocated him." (Durham Mining Museum site.) His elder brother, Thomas Bertie Blackett, used to recall that his body was brought back to the house on an open cart.
