Note
"Edward Blacket, s[on] to John of Newby in the County of York Esq. by Patience [born] 29 [March]." 4th Bt. Succeeded to the Baronetcy on death of his uncle, Sir Edward Blackett in 1756. High Sheriff of Northumberland, 1757. M.P. for Northumberland 1768-1774. A noted philanthropist, in 1757, "due to the scarcity of provisions" he ordered a fat cow to be killed, and eight bolls of rye to be baked, and distributed among the poor neighbouring familes around Matfen, viz: "to each person a loaf of bread and a piece of meat." (Newcastle Courant 5 Mar 1757). By his marriage, he acquired substantial lands in Northumberland, including Matfen. Bought Thorpe House in Surrey for his grandson, Edward Scott, in 1789. Will dated 13 Jun 1795 mentions wife Ann, youngest son William Blackett, eldest son, Edward Blackett, daughter Ann Scott.
