Note | Mentioned by her married name in will of her father 25 Aug 1611 (Surtees tree). Transcription of Hamsterley register 28 Jan 1665/6 "Esabell Blackett Widd of Hoppiland buryed in ye Church", though the original entry appears to read "Elsabeth" or "Usabeth". The names of Isabel and Elizabeth were sometimes used as variants of one another, and no Elizabeth Blackett, widow of Hoppyland, has been discovered. The position is complicated by the fact that her grandson, Edward Blackett (1638-1658), a son of Christopher, refers in his will to items given to him under Isabel's will and held for him by his father, inferring that Isabel predeceased Edward. However, Edward may have merely been informed of his grandmother's intentions to give certain items to his father to hold for him and, being away at sea, wrongly assumed that she had died shortly after making her will (no copy of which has been discovered). Surtees records the January 1665/6 burial of Isabel, but nevertheless this should be treated with caution. |
