Note | At baptism stated to be "William Blacket, illegitimate son of William Blacket (of Stokesley Hall) by Mary Blacket". By articles of agreement dated 14 Mar 1804 between William Blackett and John Wilkinson [regarding an old cottage in Bishop Auckland previously used as a school-house] the said John Wilkinson did contract and agree with the said William Blackett for the purchase of the premises in the before recited surrender of 4 Oct 1804; subject, nevertheless, to the life estate of the said Mary Stephenson in four rooms, at the east end of the premises, for the sum of one hundred and twenty pounds. [NB. The property was purchased to build the original Methodist Chapel in Barnard Castle. See also note to entry of his younger brother, Thomas Blackett, of a subsequent reference to a cottage adjoining the property.] "In Durham Gaol on Sunday last, Mr. William Blackett formerly of Weardale aged 68 years. He had been incarcerated in the gaol twenty seven years and seven months for non-payment of money under an order of the Court of Chancery." (Durham Chronicle 11 Jan 1840 deaths column.)
