Belfast Morning News 22 February 1860: "THE BELFAST TOWN BAND. We last evening had the pleasure of hearing this band perform some pieces; and, from the manner in which they were given, there is every reason to expect that in the course of a few months the members will play with a smoothness and accuracy which will be highly creditable to them and their instructor, Mr. James Cavanagh, formerly band-master of the 21st Regiment, on leaving which he was presented with a testimonial by the officers, together with a highly complimentary address. A few months since an engagement was entered into with him; and since then several members have much improved, as was amply testified by their playing of the airs we heard last evening. Various circumstances almost wholly deprived the public of the services of the Band last summer; but, under the present organisation, there isgood reason for anticipating that during the ensuing season they will be heard frequently at such points in the town or neighbourhood as may be deemed most desirable."
Belfast News-Letter 25 August 1860: "HOLYWOOD.- The Belfast Band will perform here this evening at five o'clock......James Cavanagh, Master, Belfast Band."
