Note
9th Bt. At baptism son of Sir Ralph Conyers (baronet). Inherited the baronetcy on the death of his nephew, Sir George Conyers. As a result of an appeal made by Robert Surtees he was moved from Chester-le-Street Workhouse, where he had been an inmate, on 1 Mar 1810 to the house of Mr. William Pybus [he was a saddler], where he died on 15 April. (Letter dated 17 Apr 1810 from Robert Surtees to The Gentleman's Magazine.) [NB. In 1815 William Pybus was a witness at the wedding of Sir Thomas's granddaughter Jane Hardy, though that may have been because he was a church warden.] In a subsequent letter to the magazine dated 21 May 1810 Surtees added: "...A few lines more, and my tale of the "Fall of Conyers" is told. Magni stat nominis umbra! [The mere shadow of a great name he stands] The poor Baronet left three daughters, married in very humble life: Jane, to William Hardy; Elizabeth, to Joseph Hutchinson; and Dorothy, to Joseph Barker, all working-men in the little town of Chester-le-Street. A time may yet come, perchance, when a descendant of one of these simple artizans may arise, not unworthy of the Conyers' ancient renown; and it will be a gratifying discovery to some future genealogist, when he succeeds in tracing in the quarterings of such a descendant the unsullied bearings of Conyers of Durham." (Source: Burke's Vicissitudes of Families). At burial "Sir Thomas Conyers, of Chester-le-Street, age 79, died 15 Apr of water in the chest, Baronet."
