5th prebendary Durham Cathedral 1761, canon of the first prebend Christ Church, Oxford 1763. Rector of Ryton, Co. Durham Nov 1769, Dean of Canterbury 20 Sep 1771, Bishop of Bangor 1775, 88th Archbishop of Canterbury 26 Apr 1783 - 18 Jan 1805. Died about 9.00 a.m. in his room at Lambeth Palace. "Although a promoter of Sunday-schools and foreign missions, he did not escape reproach for paying undue regard to the interests of his family. It has been well said that during his tenure of office and that of his immediate successor, the sinecures and pluralities held by the highest clergy were worthy of the medieval period." (The Cathedral Church of Canterbury 2nd edition by Hartley Withers 1897.) Court Roll, Manor of Clerkenwell 14 Feb 1800. Admission of Revd. George Moore, M.A, Prebendary of Canterbury, Revd. Robert Moore, John Moore, esq. (3 of the sons of John Moore D.D. Abp. of Canterbury).

The coffins of him and his wife Catherine (along with four, and possibly more, Archbisops of Canterbury) were discovered by accident in 2016 during refurbishment of the Garden Museum in the former chancel of the now deconsecrated St. Mary-at-Lambeth, next door to Lambeth Palace.

Bond dated 20 Jan 1770. John Moore (widower) age 30, of The College, Durham City, Catherine Eden age 21 of St. Mary-the-Less, Durham City.
