Father Ralph, coal miner, mother Margaret, formerly Marley. He was licencee of The Wheatsheaf and The Waterloo inns in Staindrop in the early 20th century. He is shown in Kelley's Directory of Durham and Northumberland 1938 as licencee of The Stag's Head and Station Hotel, Elwick Hall, near Stockton. In 1887, accompanied by his wife and infant Thomas ("Bertie"), he emigrated to America, arriving in Philadelphia on 8 Aug 1887 on the S. S. British King. He had returned to England by 1890. |
