A noted philanthropist, in 1757, "due to the scarcity of provisions" he ordered a fat cow to be killed, and eight bolls of rye to be baked, and distributed among the poor neighbouring familes around Matfen, viz: "to each person a loaf of bread and a piece of meat." (Newcastle Courant 5 Mar 1757). By his marriage, he acquired substantial lands in Northumberland, including Matfen. Bought Thorpe House in Surrey for his grandson, Edward Scott, in 1789. Will dated 13 Jun 1795 mentions wife Ann, youngest son William Blackett, eldest son, Edward Blackett, daughter Ann Scott.
