"Sir Blakiston Conyers (raised by the patronage of the house of Gibside to the office of Collector of the Port of Newcastle) was the son of a glazier, and derived nothing but his Christian name from his mother, the daughter of a shoemaker, descended in the fourth degree from the opulent house of Gibside, and in the second and third from Lawson of Brough, and Constable of Burton Constable." (The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham: volume 2: Chester ward. Robert Surtees: 1820.)
